How to celebrate The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee

(Gov.uk)

This year, Her Majesty The Queen will become the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee by achieving 70 years of service to the people of the United Kingdom, the Realms & the Commonwealth.

There is good reason to be excited about the Platinum Jubilee - while Queen Elizabeth II passed this 70 year milestone back in February of this year, the commemoration has been moved to June. This means that it will combine with the spring bank holiday, giving the British public a fabulous four-day weekend!

This special extended bank holiday weekend will give people across the UK a great opportunity to get together to commemorate this historic milestone.

The official name for this long bank holiday weekend is the Platinum Jubilee Central Weekend. It will take place from the 2nd to 5th June.

Whether you are a community group, school, or want to get involved yourself, there are many ways you can take part in The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

We have put together this handy how to guide to help you get involved in celebrating Her Majesty’s reign in the run up to and, of course, during the Platinum Jubilee Central Weekend.

Have a street party

Britain has a long history of organised street parties to mark public events. So one way you can take part in the Platinum Jubilee celebrations is to put together a street party for you & your neighbours.

You can have a street party on whichever day, at whatever time suits you & your neighbours across the four day bank holiday weekend. Or you can throw your street party as part of The Big Jubilee Lunch – we’ll tell you about this event later on!

There is some helpful advice on hosting a street party on the official government website – check it out here. If you do plan a street party, you can even share the details on an interactive map so that people can learn more about your event.

So what do you need for a successful Platinum Jubilee street party?

  • Delicious food & drink – you can ask your neighbours to each bring along a dish. This will make sure that every party guest has something they like to eat

  • Put on a classic afternoon tea - include a Victoria sponge cake, sandwiches & scones. According to a former butler for the palace, The Queen likes a cup of tea & a slice of cake every day, so it would be rude not to enjoy a slice of your own when celebrating Her Majesty's Jubilee!

  • Regal red, white & blue decorations - Decorate your street with bunting, British flags & flowers

  • Brighten up the tables with themed paper cups & plates - don't forget the napkins too!

  • Get everyone involved in some good old-fashioned games – think egg & spoon or three-legged races

  • Test your neighbours' knowledge with a quiz about the royal family

Beacon lighting

Great Britain has a long tradition of commemorating important royal occasions like jubilees, coronations & weddings by lighting beacons.

Local councils have been asked to play a part in the Platinum Jubilee this year by lighting beacons on the 2nd June. Over 1,500 beacons will be lit across the UK to celebrate this anniversary of Her Majesty's coronation.

You can get involved with beacon lighting in your community by finding an event in your area. Local councils across the UK will be holding beacon lighting events, many of which will be open to the public & no booking is required for you to attend.

For example, the National Trust is holding a beacon lighting ceremony in Buckinghamshire which will include an open air ceilidh band, a piper, a bar & food stalls.

The Big Jubilee Lunch

The Big Lunch is the UK's largest yearly get-together for neighbours. It is a simple idea from the Eden Project in Cornwall - that as many people as possible across the country have lunch with their neighbours on a weekend in June every year. The aim of the event is to encourage a sense of community, friendship & fun.

Every year since the event first started back in 2009, The Big Lunch has inspired communities to celebrate their relationships & to get to know each other better. After the success of the first 'Big Jubilee Lunch' which honoured The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012, The Big Lunch will be bringing the Jubilee festivities to communities once again this year to honour the Platinum Jubilee.

The Big Jubilee Lunch will take place on Sunday 5th June. Whether you share a cuppa with a neighbour on your doorstep or you have a larger get-together in your garden, join people across Britain to share food & friendship.

Check out the Eden Project's website for advice on organising a Big Jubilee Lunch in your neighbourhood. You can also use their Big Lunch map to find already created events near you.
